WORKING TO REVOLUTIONIZE CANCER THERAPY
Cancer is not a single disease but a group of diverse disorders that, taken together, are among the leading causes of death throughout the world. While there have been great advances in dealing with cancer, it is still widely recognized as the leading area of unmet medical need.  Many forms of cancer cannot be cured. Many are not diagnosed properly.
Millennium is seeking to revolutionize cancer therapy by developing a series of breakthrough treatments that target key pathways on which cancer cells depend. To achieve this, we apply our R&D engine to identify and characterize these pathways, and to develop novel drugs that induce beneficial changes in their activity. Our capabilities encompass both small molecule and antibody drugs, so that we can choose the most appropriate candidates to achieve the desired therapeutic effects. As we develop these drugs we will explore innovative designs for clinical trials, and use our understanding of relevant pathways and targets within those pathways to optimize combination therapies. In our quest to implement personalized medicine, we also look for differences between people with apparently similar disease that may affect their responses to treatment.
We believe we have made substantial progress in this endeavor, with one product, VELCADE® (bortezomib) for Injection, that has been approved in the U.S. and 40 other countries worldwide, several additional product candidates undergoing clinical testing, and a strong portfolio of potential drugs at earlier stages of development. With these development candidates and the earlier-stage programs behind them, we feel that we are indeed making substantial progress towards our goal of revolutionizing cancer therapy.
